Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation had a successful 2010 thanks to the hard work and generosity of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256 members.

The legion made its final contribution of 2010 with a $3,000 gift to the foundation’s effort to fund the new renal dialysis unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

While the unit has been providing renal care to kidney patients since September, the foundation is still raising funds to purchase haemodialysis machines.

Legion 256 supports health-care equipment and services that add to the quality of life of veterans and raised their donation through gaming activities throughout the year as well as its annual poppy campaign.

The $3,000 donation to the renal unit brings the legion’s total to $11,000 in 2010, including $4,500 to palliative care, $1,500 to Lifeline’s Silent Guardian Fund and $2,000 toward the ER expansion at NRGH.

Legion 256 has donated $59,750 to the foundation since 1990.

“Legion 256 has been resolute in their commitment to helping their members and this support also extends to any NRGH patients seeking care,” said Amber Adams of the foundation.

“The foundation is incredibly appreciative of this generous commitment.”
