Mattress company extends recycling

Sleep Country Canada is extending its mattress recycling program into Western Canada, preventing more than 150,000 mattresses from ending up in landfills.

As well, the company’s Donated Bed program will see more than 59,000 gently-used bed sets provided to families in need.

After delivering a new mattress and/or box spring to customer, the delivery team picks up the used set which is evaluated for quality, wear and reusability. For the past 16 years, gently-used beds have been made available to families in need through charitable organizations. Sleep Country pays a per-unit fee to Recyc-Mattress, a mattress and box spring recycling depot, to break down all remaining beds into their fundamental elements.

The elements of the recycled mattress are sold to salvage companies to be reused to create new foam for carpet underlay, athletic safety mats, animal bedding and tire covers.

Wood elements are reused to create playgrounds, park benches and more.
