Community members from Nanaimo’s south end gathered today to celebrate their neighbourhood.
The South End Community Association held South End Day, a free community gathering, on Saturday, June 17, at Deverill Square Park. Allison Ainsley, secretary and event organizer, said she was pleased with the turnout.
“It’s great,” she said. “We’ve got lots of people from the community out. Several different activities for kids as well as youths and seniors for today … We bring the community together for a day of connection.”
South End Day featured activities and games, some in partnership with the Nanaimo Art Gallery and PacificSport, as well as a pet parade, a seniors’ tea and more.
Unlike past years, the association bought items for prizes instead of relying on donations.
“What we did this year, instead of having an auction or raffle, is we actually purchased some of the items for the raffle from the small businesses because it’s been a tough year for a lot of people,” Ainsley said.
