Transit riders will soon have a more accurate picture of trip information as RDN Transit is set to introduce improved bus tracking technology.

Fifty-nine RDN Transit buses will be equipped with new automatic vehicle location hardware beginning Tuesday, Oct. 3, according to a B.C. Transit press release. As part of that, buses will have new digital passenger information displays providing route information, service alerts and approaching stops, the press release said.

Users may lose real-time data sporadically as the system is upgraded, said the press release, but any issues are expected to be ironed out within the first few weeks.

B.C. Transit said customers planning trips via desktop computers will no longer have access to the NextRide trip planner starting Oct. 3 and recommend using the mobile phone Transit App, Google Maps or the B.C. Transit riders’ guide

Money for the upgrades comes from the Government of Canada’s Canada Infrastructure Program, with a cost-sharing formula that sees the federal government responsible for 50 per cent of costs, the B.C. government paying 40 per cent and the Regional District of Nanaimo and B.C. Transit covering 10 per cent.
