Nanaimo artistic swimmers, golden at provincials, will now compete internationally

VanIsle Masters Artistic Swimming Club members won gold at provincials and are now headed to an international competition in the Netherlands.

Nanaimo's masters artistic swimming team was in sync at provincials this spring and earned a chance to compete internationally.

The VanIsle Masters Artistic Swimming Club finished with numerous medal-winning results at B.C. Artistic Swimming's Mable Moran masters provincials April 21 in Richmond.

"We had a really successful and fun meet," noted a club press release.

A highlight of provincials was the masters team of April Harkness, Carla Veal, Donna Falconer, Thea Miscavish, Megan Nunez-Delgado, Carol Stuart, Melissa Pirart, Amanda Boyd and Carol Ramey winning gold for their combo routine. As well, Veal and Falconer won gold in both their free routine and technical routine in the 40-49 duet division, and Diane Dakers took gold in the 60-69 solo technical routine.

The masters 35-49 team of Emily Duff, Kylee Lothrop, Megan Peddie, Bev Pulyk, Kirstin Stuart, Myriam Ruest, Megan Steffens and Wendy Topic claimed silver for both their free routine and technical routine and Dakers earned silver in the solo free routine.

In the recreational division. Christy Plommer earned gold in intermediate figures. She teamed with Genevieve Johnson, Kate Palmer and Charlotte Whiteley to earn silver in team competition, and teamed with Johnson to earn another silver in the duet. Joanne Crandall took silver for her solo routine, Whiteley earned silver in intermediate figures and Crandall earned bronze in beginner figures.

The competitive team and the competitive duet were both approved by Canada Artistic Swimming to represent the country at the Fryslan Open In Heerenveen, Netherlands, on July 6-7.
