Suspected child luring solved

A possible child luring reported by police has turned out to be a case of miscommunication.

A possible child luring reported by police has turned out to be a case of miscommunication.

Two boys, 12 and 13, reported a man in a newer model SUV drove up while they were putting up signs to at the corner of Eighth Street and Bruce Avenue to advertise a school rummage sale Saturday and gestured for them to come over to his vehicle.

When they refused, he drove off and the boys reported the incident to an adult who reported it to police.

The driver of the SUV, a 61-year-old Nanaimo man, saw articles in local media and contacted police Monday to explain he was only giving them the "thumbs up" sign indicating he supported their efforts and to let them know he planned to attend the rummage sale.

Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said police are satisfied no harm was intended, but that the boys acted properly by reporting what they thought was suspicious behaviour.
