To the editor,

Re: Wildfire fight needs more accountability, Letters, May 29.

Most are human-caused, the letter writer says. They solve murders by tracking cell phones, so check records of phones in the area at the time the fire started.

But what Canada really needs is a national firefighting unit that can be deployed where needed federally. My vision is that people would volunteer to join the service and then be well-paid and housed. Yes, I’m talking about a new unit in the Canadian military. Trained by the best to be the best. These fire soldiers would not only be deployed in Canada to fight fires, they would also be well-trained reserve soldiers of our armed forces.

As a Canadian who is still proud of our military as a whole, I say this new unit would enhance our military in a great way. Give us a military to support and be even prouder of.

Neil Saunders, Nanaimo
