High school basketball season will intensify now that it’s the new year.

During the relatively short high school hoops season, every game matters in the sprint toward North Islands, Islands and provincials, and Nanaimo teams are taking advantage of their opportunities to compete on the court.

The Dover Bay Dolphins and the Nanaimo District Islanders senior boys’ teams both won tournaments the week of Dec. 14-16, with NDSS taking first place at the Hub City Holiday Classic co-hosted by Nanaimo District Secondary School and Wellington Secondary, and Dover winning a Salmon Arm tourney the same week. Dover Bay won two of three games this past weekend at the highly competitive UVic Alumni tournament, defeating Saratoga 75-56, losing to Spectrum 70-68 and then beating Lambrick Park 106-100.

Dover Bay and NDSS meet on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Dover Bay Secondary School gym. The week after that, Wellington’s annual Superball tournament happens Jan. 11-13 with senior boys’ and senior girls’ action.
